Psoriasis and eczema – what’s what?

Great question Sharon, and one the CPN hears a lot!
Both psoriasis and eczema are treatable inflammatory skin disorders. Both psoriasis and eczema can occur anywhere on the skin and can cause intense itch, discomfort, pain and self-consciousness. Neither condition is contagious.
Like psoriasis, the cause of eczema is unclear; there are a variety of genetic, environmental, and immune factors at play. Generally, research suggests that though the two diseases may share some genetic overlap, they have different underlying causes and function in different ways in the body. Though possible, psoriasis and eczema rarely co-occur in the same individual. A dermatologist can determine which skin condition a person is experiencing.
